EffectiveUI Introduces the Discovery Channel Cancer Collage, a Digital Monument for Individuals Touched by Cancer

Denver, Colo. – (May 1, 2007) – EffectiveUI, a leading online business application design and development firm, announced today the launch of the Cancer Collage – an interactive multimedia application that allows individuals from across the globe to artistically express their experiences with cancer. Created for Discovery Channel, the launch of the Cancer Collage coincides with the premiere of the documentary and live town hall meeting, Koppel on Discovery: Living with Cancer airing on Sunday, May 6 at 8PM e/p.

The Cancer Collage gives individuals the opportunity to create a personal card and upload their stories, poems, pictures and video to express how they have been personally impacted by the disease. Users can also browse the collage to view other submissions, as well as search and filter for stories similar to their own.

As with all projects at EffectiveUI, the design and development teams worked closely together on the Cancer Collage. This cross-understanding and collaboration of design and development allows the company to create rich Internet applications that are functional, and scalable, as well as engaging and aesthetically powerful. As the mouse drags over the images, the screen scrolls like a movie reel and the faces and stories come to the forefront for the user to immerse themselves.

“We are thrilled to partner with Discovery on this amazing and emotionally compelling multimedia project,” said Anthony Franco, president of EffectiveUI. “This application demonstrates Discovery’s commitment to online excellence and their willingness to leverage new technologies and methodologies to innovate their digital businesses, while improving the user experience.”

Employing their Fast Track SDDM (strategy, design, development and measurement) methodology, EffectiveUI worked with Discovery to create an interface that is compelling to the user and relevant to Discovery’s objectives. EffectiveUI created a user interface for the Cancer Collage that creates a living piece of art where those affected by cancer can contribute their stories in a meaningful way.

“The power of the Cancer Collage is its limitless potential to grow and evolve with each personal submission. It is a privilege to be part of a project that is so deeply personal and global at the same time,” said Jane Root, president and general manager of Discovery Channel and Science Channel. “Discovery Channel’s LIVING WITH CANCER will be an unprecedented multimedia television event that will inform and inspire each one of us to get involved and fight to make a difference.”

In the live town hall meeting at Discovery Communications Headquarters in Silver Spring, MD, Ted Koppel will be joined by a panel of cancer survivors including Elizabeth Edwards, wife of presidential candidate John Edwards; Lance Amrstrong, seven-time Tour de France champion; and Leroy Sievers, Koppel’s long time executive producer and friend — each of whom will discuss their experience of coping with a cancer diagnosis. Following the show, the Cancer Collage will be a lasting tribute to those involved with the documentary and those who would like to share their stories.
